Do your Bridesmaids a favor! Lose the formalities!

While at home this weekend I opened up a pandora’s box in my own childhood closet.

Boxes, like 17 of them, of old notes from my entire grade school and high school years, My sister’s wedding china (Mind you she’s been married for 6 years and its never made it to her house)  And Dresses…..lots of them! Prom’s, Homecomings and of course Bridesmaids!

Why do we keep these when we know were never going to wear them again? On the off chance that “Oh I can just get it hemmed and make it a cocktail dress.”

Who are we kidding? Every bride claims that the bridesmaids dress that she is choosing is totally re-wearable!  Maybe….. as a donated Prom dress!

Now, see I am very aware now-a-days how far the wedding industry has come along with these new styles of bridesmaids dresses. Finally the cut and silhouette have improved but one thing hasn’t- The price!  Tack on the alteration and you’re lookin at $200.00-300.00 For a dress that may or not be attractive, your style or too formal for any other occasion than well….being a bridesmaid in another wedding.

Well summer’s officially here, which is  the most popular time slot in wedding season.  If you’re having a casual summer wedding I have a great idea that your bridesmaids will be extremely thankful for…..yup cheap, mainstream find em’ almost anywhere, Bridesmaid dresses!  That still look pretty enough and formal enough for a wedding!

Just shop around online or well known speciality stores for a dress that fits your wedding theme.  Here are some great reasons why you should avoid the formal bridal party dresses in lue for a more stylish casual option.

1. Savings!-  Huge savings depending exactly what kind of dress your wanting. If you’ve been in a wedding before, you know all the extra expenses required for being a bridesmaid.  Hair and make up, Decorations, food and games for bachalorette and Bridal showers, Gifts for wedding, showers and bachalorette, shoes for the dress. It goes on and on ! Lets give our friends a break by picking out a dress they will be proud to pay for and that won’t break the bank!

2 Versitility– Think of the selection you can choose from. The Mall or internet is your oyster!

3. Avoid the Pins- Less possibility there will be any need for Alterations

4.  Schedule your own fitting– Instead of 1-2 fittings scheduled in the brides hometown, You have the convience of ordering and going to the store and trying on the dress.

5.  Wearability– The dress doesn’t have the formality that holds you back from being able to wear typical bridesmaids dresses. You can wear a mainstream dress again….and again!

6.  The Perfect Bridesmaid Gift:  Give a useable and appropriate gift! Skip paying for the jewelry or some cheesy ingraved item thats bound to get trashed. Get them the dress! You can find many options from $25.00 and up!  Oh! I am so serious!

Check out some possibilities! My favorite of all (honestly, not partial at all) is Bevello’s,online fashion boutique,Chocolate Covered Strawberry Dress.  This dress is formal enough to be bridesmaid savvy, but also so re-wearable!  Its very girly and feminine and goes great with brown and pink themed weddings!

Orla Kiely Designs

Orla Kiely Designs

About 3 years ago I found this amazing designer, Orla Kiely at Anthropologie.  I was so drawn to her vintage and simplistic prints.  I bought “the big zip wallet” for a $88.oo which usually is about 3 times my usual wallet budget.

AAAAAh3YMl4AAAAAATG-mw

But let me  personally vouch for this London based designer!  This is by far the best, most durable, easy to clean, fits everything and cutest wallet I have EVER owned.  I was able to have it for a year and I could of had it longer if I kept it a little cleaner (my bad).  I bought another one this year (picture above).  I know many of her customers must be repeats!

I get so many compliments on it and now her intriguing patterns have become increasingly popular!  Check out some of her stuff I posted below. Orla initailly started out with handbags and wallets and now has expanded to clothing and even a home line at target! (WATCH FUN VIDEO) This product is worth every penny.

The quality is outstanding!  I don’t think I will ever get enough of her vision for an adorable and long lasting line of fashion items that embody a retro 60’s and 70’s conservative vibe with a modern vintage twist!

Here’s an exerpt from her website : www.orlakiely.com:

The world of Orla Kiely is one where color, pattern, graphic control, texture and rhythm continually work and rework together. Orla has a unique, immediately recognisable design language, developed through graphic patterns that celebrate her optimistic spirit. As down-to-earth as her designs are popular, the key to what drives Orla is her fixation on the evolution of a signature style, devotion to quality and practicality.”

Finally!  I think the reason I love this “Tulu” clutch from bevello is because the purple floral print on the strap  is so reminiscent of the Orla Kiely prints.  Bevello, online clothing boutique specializes in researching emerging independent designers such as “Tulu” that bring cuteness and joy into everyones closet!

You’ve offically hit up the best blogspot that has all you need to know about last nights “Fashion Show” Episode.

“Every designer needs to have a few tricks up their sleeve and in this week’s Harper’s Bazaar mini-challenge the designers need to prove they know the tricks of the trade in a “repair relay race.” In the elimination challenge, the designers must collaborate and create a unified line of coats that cohesively addresses every season — Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.”

Bravo’s Rate their Looks: http://tinyurl.com/qqkeek

Who do you think pulled out the best coat? I thought daniella took it this week personally!

Each week there’s an option to buy the winning outfit: I wasn’t really feeling andrew’s winning look but I do LOVE the retail cut of the piece he made for sale to the public!

A pretty ingenious idea. A coat that doubles as a short spring bubble style or a long trench.  I am actually considering this coat! Could we be seeing this new silhoette on our coat racks this fall?

Take a peek at what’s on sale from the previous winning looks

Finally, I want the bevello readers input! Who do you think should have won this week? Check in on our poll.

Til next week bvers!

Everyone’s thinking Go-Green lately, as in eco-friendly.  Here’s WWD’s take on green in the high fashion world of accessories.

“These days, designers are definitely thinking green in more ways that one.  And there are plenty of glam accessories around in the shade.”

My favorite thing this Spring is COLOR ! Everything in my closet is focused on color rather than pattern or adornments. While I admit I still love beading and the embellished look, my new weakness is anything with a bright and beautiful color! Like this dress from Calypso–

When you wear beautiful color that pops you don’t need to accessorize too much, because the color speaks for itself! Wearing a solid, bright color is always flattering and fun!

Fellow Bevellonians, I have a confession: I secretly love the side ponytail.

I know, most people say they look ridiculous and consider them a serious faux pas in normal social situations — but hear me out. I was only alive for 1.5 years during the ’80s (aka when the side pony had it’s heydey) and unfortunately, one-year-olds pretty much have no hair so my options were limited. And I can’t help but feel deprived in missing out on this trend.

We almost had a side ponytail comeback a few years ago, and every once in a while you’ll see a celebrity donning a glammed-up version on the red carpet.  But as far as day-to-day wear goes, you just don’t see them anymore. And I really don’t know why not.

I mean, lets think about it for a second.  Normal ponytails don’t exactly make a girl feel attractive, do they? All of your hair is pretty much swept off your face and knotted up behind your head. But we wear them because they’re so convenient when there’s just no time to style.

The side ponytail, though, adds more finesse to an ensemble than a regular ponytail, but is just as quick and convenient. Sure, your hair is up, but it’s also brought to the front and can (for those with longer hair) fall in front of your shoulder quite nicely.

Now, don’t get me wrong — the side ponytail can certainly go horribly wrong. I present to you exhibits A and B:

1987-side-ponytail

Exhibit A

I can appreciate JLo’s effort, but this side ponytail is a bit too high and a bit to…on the side. InStyle says side ponytails work best lower, nearer to the nape of your neck.

1987-side-ponytail

Exhibit B

Yeah, I don’t really know what’s going on here. Again, higher side ponytails just don’t look right. Also, a rule of thumb: the more natural they look, the better. No need to use a can of hairspray to hold everything in place.

Now, let’s see it done right:

1987-side-ponytail

Molly Sims

That’s more like it. Instyle also suggests blow-drying your hair upside down and scrunching it before you put it in a side ponytail to give it this thick, tousled look.

1987-side-ponytail

Nichole Kidman

Or you can smooth it out and dress it up like Nichole Kidman!

True, it’s hard to predict now what the hairstyling trends will be this for summer.
But when I need a quick ‘do, I know what I’ll be rockin’.
